Prince Edward Island Central Coastal Drive

Today was rainy all day and 17 degrees. Burrr. Actually 62 degrees Fahrenheit. We toured the central coastal area despite the weather. The pictures are not as good due to cloud cover. The 8 mile confederation bridge is on this part of the island, so I was able to catch a photo from the distance. Elwin will take some more photos of the bridge as we go back over it on Sunday. This island is full of old churches and graveyards. The churches are all old and white with lovely spires. The first one was closed, but is the historic St. Mary's Church of PEI. The land is all red clay dirt and full of productive farms. It is so green and lush, but looks the same after a while. The lighthouses are small and old. Most cannot be entered. We stopped at Cows Creamery and got that ice cream I missed yesterday. Everything here is about Anna of Green Gables, so I downloaded a sample of the book to read. The author made this island famous and for that they have the longest (50 years) show based on the book. At the Anna of Green Gables chocolate shop, I found a hat that would help me look like Anna, so the natives would recognize me as one of their own. Elwin and I had fun despite the rain.

Red soil, rich in iron for good crops, especially potatoes, soy, and corn.

North Rustico Harbour Lighthouse in the midst of houses.

The factory store of PEI's best ice cream, cheese and butter.

Good chocolates made from the same company as Cows Creamery.

I look just like Anna of Green Fables, oops I mean Gables, at 57 years of age, don't you think?
Small lighthouse in the distance on right from Victoria Park.

All  of the island is productive farm land. Looks like the Midwest and very hilly.

The 8 mile confederation bridge which takes you from New Brunswick to Prince Edward Island.  They toll you when you leave. The toll for us will be about $60 American dollars.

Beautiful white churches everywhere.

This area reminds me of the northeastern states. All the towns are similar with little churches and graveyards next to them, or behind them. All cultures of that time were similar in architecture. PEI is more English now, so churches are Anglican in nature. New Brunswick is more French, so Catholicism is predominant.
