Bar Harbor is named for the tide relief allowing transportation across the islands during low tide. |
Today we toured Bar Harbor Maine by way of Ole's Trolley to get the gist of the history. Bar Harbor has a sand bar that goes to the islands and people can drive and hike there when the tide is low. If they do not pay attention to the tide they lose their car, or rental car to the Atlantic Ocean. After the trolley we walked downtown and got a really good ice cream cone. They had a cruise ship in port today, so the streets and shops were very busy. After Bar Harbor we toured Acadia National Park via the drive loop for a couple of hours. Cadillac Mountain is 1530 ft above sea level and the first to get sunrise in the US. From some of the park you can view the White Mountains of New Hampshire. They have one beach called sand beach which was busy. The weather here was in the 70's, very pleasant. We traveled to Thunder Hole which brings in the water via the Atlantic, and sprays people. Today it was very calm. We then went to Otter Point, and the Jordan Pond House which housed the gift shop and a restaurant. The loop was scenic to say the least. Elwin got our National Park Pass for $10 today, since he is 62 years of age. Yeah, it beats $80 from two years ago. This time age pays, trouble is, hiking is not as easy as it used to be. Luckily all the parks have a drivable scenic route. If we have time we might do the carriage tour on the carriage roads of Acadia.
